Welcome to LawBook! These Terms and Conditions (“Terms”) govern your use of LawBook, the practice management software for lawyers built by Upview Technologies (“Upview”, “we”, “us”), including the web app, the mobile app and related support channels (the “Service”). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use LawBook.

At a glance

You own your practice data

Your contacts, matters, notes, documents and records stay yours. We only process them to provide the Service.

Section 5

Software, not legal advice

LawBook doesn’t give legal advice or create a lawyer-client relationship with you or your clients.

Section 2

Check dates and suggestions

Review calculated deadlines and chatbot answers yourself. You stay responsible for your work.

Sections 5 and 8

Cancel any time

Export your data first. We keep it for 30 days, then it is permanently deleted.

Section 12

Agreeing to these Terms

  • If you sign up for a firm, you confirm you have authority to bind the firm, and “you” includes the firm.
  • These Terms work together with our Privacy Policy, which explains how we handle personal information.
  • If you have a separate written agreement with us for the Service, that agreement prevails where it conflicts with these Terms.

The LawBook service

  • LawBook helps you manage matters, contacts, documents, calendars, tasks, time, and billing records on the web and on mobile.
  • LawBook is software, not a law firm. We do not give legal advice, and using LawBook does not create a lawyer-client relationship between Upview and you or your clients.
  • Features may change over time. Some features are in early access and may be limited or unavailable. Where reasonably possible, we will tell you before removing a feature you rely on.
  • Some features depend on your plan, your jurisdiction or the services you connect.

Accounts and eligibility

  • You must be at least 18 and a legal professional, or staff working with one, to use LawBook.
  • You must give accurate information when you sign up and keep it up to date.
  • You may not create an account if we previously closed one of your accounts for breaking these Terms.
  • You are responsible for keeping your password and any other applicable credentials confidential. Do not share your account or transfer it to someone else.
  • You are responsible for activity under your account. Tell us promptly at support@thelawbook.online if you suspect unauthorised use.
  • Firm accounts. The firm is responsible for its members and for how it uses the Service. Administrators can invite and remove members, and assign roles.
  • Custom role access. You decide what different roles can see, and you are responsible for who you invite.

Subscriptions, fees and billing

  • Paid plans are charged by plan and seat at the prices shown when you sign up or in Settings > Subscription.
  • Payments are handled by our payment processor. Card details are held by the processor, not by us.
  • Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period unless you cancel before the renewal date.
  • Prices exclude taxes unless we say otherwise. You are responsible for applicable taxes.
  • Payments are non-refundable unless the law requires otherwise or we state otherwise in writing.
  • If a payment fails, we may retry it and, after notice, limit or suspend access. Your data stays available for export (see section 12).
  • We will give you at least 30 days notice before a price change takes effect at your next renewal.
  • Free trials and early access offers end as stated in the offer.

Your practice data and professional duties

  • You own your practice data. This means the contacts, matters, notes, documents, time entries, invoices and client account records you store in LawBook. We do not claim ownership of it.
  • Our licence to it is limited. You allow us to host, process, copy and display your practice data only to provide the Service to you, including sync, search, backups and support you ask for.
  • You decide what goes in. You are responsible for having the right to store it, for who in your practice can see it, and for any notices or consents your clients are owed.
  • Your professional duties stay with you. Using LawBook does not change your obligations to clients, courts or regulators, including confidentiality, privilege, and record keeping.
  • Deadlines and court rules. Dates that may be calculated by LawBook are a convenience. Check them against the rules, court orders and calendar of your jurisdiction before you rely on them. You remain responsible for meeting deadlines.

Acceptable use

When using LawBook, you must NOT:

  • Create fake accounts, impersonate someone else, or claim to be a legal professional when you are not.
  • Upload unlawful content or content you have no right to share, or use LawBook for fraud or any other unlawful act.
  • Upload malicious code, or interfere with or disrupt the Service, other users or our systems.
  • Probe or test our security, access data that is not yours, or try to bypass access controls, multi-factor sign-in or confirmation steps without our written permission.
  • Copy, reverse engineer, resell or sublicense the Service, or use it to build a competing product.
  • Use bots, scrapers or other automated means that overload the Service or collect data from it.

Serious misuse

Fraud, attempts to reach other users’ data and malicious code can lead to immediate suspension without notice. We may remove content that breaks these rules.

Connected services and third-party content

  • You choose whether to connect services such as a Google or Outlook calendar. Each has its own terms and privacy policy, and we are not responsible for them.
  • By connecting a service, you allow us to access the data needed for the features you turn on. You can disconnect it at any time in Settings > Integrations.
  • Events from an external calendar stay owned by that calendar, so changes made there may replace what you see in LawBook. LawBook only adds its own matter link.
  • If you turn on your iCal feed, anyone with the link can read the events in it. Keep the link private and regenerate it if it is shared by mistake.
  • Integrations may change or stop working if the other company changes its service.

AI assistant and automated features

  • Chatbot suggestions and answers can be wrong or incomplete. Review them before you rely on them. Nothing becomes a time entry or a deadline until you accept or create it.
  • LawBook will not make decisions on your behalf. You remain responsible for your work.
  • The chatbot answers how-to questions from our knowledge base. It is not legal advice. Please do not type client confidential information into it.
  • We do not use your practice data to train AI models.

Support, availability and the mobile app

  • You can reach support through the in-app support tickets or support@thelawbook.online. Please do not put client confidential information in a ticket or screenshot.
  • We work to keep LawBook available, but we cannot promise it will always run without interruption. We will give notice of planned maintenance where we reasonably can.
  • On mobile, notes you capture offline are saved on your device and synced when a connection returns.
  • You are responsible for the security of your devices, including using the app lock, keeping the app updated and signing out of lost devices from Settings > Privacy & Security on the desktop app.

Intellectual property

  • Upview owns the Service, including its software, design, starter templates, and the LawBook name and logo.
  • While your subscription is active, we give you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the Service for your practice.
  • Your practice data remains yours (see section 5).
  • If you send us feedback or ideas, we may use them without owing you anything.

Privacy and data protection

  • Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect, how we use and protect it, where it is hosted and your rights.
  • For your practice data, you are the controller and we are the processor. We handle it only to provide the Service and on your instructions.
  • You must have a lawful basis for putting your clients’ information into LawBook and must give them any notices the law requires.
  • If we learn of a breach affecting your data, we will tell you without undue delay so you can meet your own notification duties.

Suspension, termination and data export

We may suspend or end your access if:

  • You break these Terms or the acceptable use rules in section 6.
  • You do not pay when payment is due.
  • Your use puts the security of the Service or other users at risk.
  • The law requires it.

We will give notice where we reasonably can, except in serious cases.

Ending your subscription. You can cancel at any time in Settings > Subscription or by contacting us. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period.

Export and deletion. When you cancel, we ask you to export all your data. We keep it for 30 days and you can restore your account during that time. After the 30 days, the data is permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.

Sections that by their nature should continue after termination, such as intellectual property, disclaimers, limits on liability, indemnity and governing law, will continue.

Disclaimers

To the extent the law allows, LawBook is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind.

  • We do not promise that the Service will be error-free, uninterrupted or free of security risks.
  • We do not promise that calculated deadlines, suggestions or chatbot answers are correct or complete.
  • We do not promise that LawBook meets the specific rules of your regulator or jurisdiction.
  • LawBook is not a substitute for your professional judgment.

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows:

  • Upview is not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential losses, or for lost profits, revenue or goodwill.
  • Upview is not liable for the outcome of your professional work, including missed deadlines, accounting errors or regulatory action that arises from relying on the Service.
  • Upview is not liable for third-party services you connect or for content others provide.
  • Our total liability for any claim is limited to the fees you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as liability for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.

Indemnity

You agree to cover Upview against third-party claims, and the reasonable costs of defending them, that arise from your practice data, your breach of these Terms, or your breach of the law or someone else’s rights. We will tell you promptly about any claim and let you help defend it.

Governing law and disputes

  • These Terms are governed by the laws of Sri Lanka.
  • If you have a concern, please contact us first. We will try to resolve it within 30 days.
  • If it cannot be resolved, the courts of Colombo have exclusive jurisdiction, except where the law of your country gives you the right to bring a claim elsewhere.

Changes to these Terms

  • We may update these Terms from time to time and will post the new version here with a new last-updated date.
  • For major changes, we will email account holders or show a notice in the app before the change takes effect.
  • Continuing to use LawBook after that date means you accept the updated Terms. If you do not agree, you can cancel before it takes effect.

General and contact

  • These Terms and our Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and Upview about the Service.
  • If part of these Terms cannot be enforced, the rest still applies.
  • If we do not enforce a right straight away, we have not given it up.
  • You may not transfer your rights under these Terms without our consent. We may transfer ours as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of assets.
  • We are not responsible for delays or failures caused by events outside our reasonable control.
  • We may give you notices by email or in the app.
